“Education makes people easy to lead, but difficult to drive: easy to govern, but impossible to enslave,” as was wisely said by Peter Brougham. Education is the soul of a society during its transformation from one age band to the other. In most countries, the USA being our main concern, there exists a formal Education Department. In the United States, this is a cabinet level department that has various responsibilities concerning the acquiring of knowledge of the citizens. For a long time now, there has been a heated debate on whether this body should be purged. In references to various articles, this remains to be a hard issue to decide on. Thus, this paper will discuss whether the department of education should be eliminated.
The education department is the smallest unit in the cabinet of the US government. This sector was created back in the year 1980 by Jimmy Carter. Its total number of employees amount to just five thousand people. This unit is responsible for various activities. Its main roles are overlooking how funds are divided among schools and ensuring that there is equal access to education for both sexes. For one reason or the other, the GOP presidential candidates are advocating for having this sector abolished.
There are quite a number of reasons as to why most of these presidential aspirants think this as an irrelevant institution. One of these reasons is that this sector has the third prevalent budget among the fifteen cabinet level departments. The largest amount of money in this budget is set aside for the bipartisan No Child Left Behind plan. To many, this is one of the most expensive projects; yet even after all that money being set aside for it, it has remained inactive and onerous for teachers and school districts.

Others argue that the existence of this department contravene the 10th Amendment since the Constitution does not have any section that regulates the amount of money given to this unit as funds. The Amendment states that, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
The issue of the elimination of the Education department has been a debatable issue for a long time now. The issue has been the main discussion in the Standard republican. Most people argue out that this department is equal to the Federal department that was abolished in 1980. The federal department was abolished by Ronald Reagan after Jimmy Carter had created it. The reason behind this act was that this Department was believed to have no constitutional powers allowing it to get involved with the school curriculum or take control of the market area. This also applies to the Department of Education. There is a need to abolish it so as the citizens will be able to have a say and control over their children’s education at all levels. By doing so, we will be able to bring to an end the federal prying that has been controlling the children’s education in the United States.
The Education Department is a pathway to many things
For example, this department has incorporated the aspirations of George Bush, which he declared in his policy of No Child Left Behind the law. This is one of the policies that are very expensive, and all the same, this policy has highly contributed to the expansion of the federal government roles in education sector. The federal government was rule out yet through this policy; it has gotten it way back to the system. It would be nice and appropriate to have this department abolished so as to have this other department of federal government ruling in the country’s system. The current President, Barack Obama has admitted that the US is overspending, and he promised to cut down the unnecessary budgets: “I’m running to pay down our debt in a way that’s balanced and responsible. After inheriting a $1 trillion deficit, I signed $2 trillion of spending cuts into law,” he also stated that, ‘‘since I’ve been president, federal spending has risen at the lowest pace in nearly 60 years. Think about that.” This was a clear indication of how much loss and expenses the Federal government has taken the country at large. This is due to having some agencies like the Education Department running in the system.
The country is going through a lot of hustles and problems
The main mania contributing to this quandary is the expensive budget proposed by this department and the money issued to it in reference to its costly policies. The country seriously and desperately needs to get to the root of the problem that is affecting its economy. This can only be achieved through trying to gather and investigate the government from its roots. This is one of the main causes of the budget problem. The department does not seem to be contributing in any positive manner towards the wellness of the country. As a result, their advantages have been outdone by their disadvantages. Demolishing this department will highly assist to save the country from the great budget problems it has found itself in.
Judging the government’s department through their achievements would be a nice way of determining their proficiency rather than checking on their objectives. The Department of Education has great ambitions, but what they put forward at the end of the day is very low compared to the high expectation that people have in them. Thus, to my mind, this department is not of help to our children in any way since the parents have no say in their children’s education. It is then unfair to them and their children as well. It would be better if we allowed the teachers to take charge of this department and let them work closely with the parents so as to find a solution to the nightmare that has attacked this department and the economy issues of the country as well.
This department also consumes a lot of money, yet it ends up delivering very little at the end of the day. This is a great challenge to the parents who have to pay the school fees for their children, and after all their hard work, their children end up receiving something that is not worth what they paid for. There is clear evidence that, since this department was created, the children’s performance has been depreciating. What is then reason for having such a risk in our system?
The Education Department has been consuming the highest percentage of the taxes that most Americans are paying. In the federal government, there are only 30 powers spelled out in its catalog. These powers are allotted budget as per the Constitution. Education is not amongst these thirty. This clearly shows that decisions on the Education of the children should be left open for the People to decide what is right and good for them.
The Department of Education is one of the federal agencies which have become malicious in their own way. These agencies have a trend of increasing their budget from the original amount to a much more expensive budget. The Education department is not an exception at all. When we compare this organization’s budget that was produced in 2011, we can be able to see that the budget was actually raised from 13.1 US dollars to 77.8 dollars. This department has continued to ask for more money, yet it does not properly account for it. This department is the least in the list with few employees, yet it takes the largest portion of money, thus making the country to go at a loss. This has made the citizens to be taxed highly so that the administration is able to manage other sectors. Due to all this mess, life has become hard for a common citizen. Poverty levels have increased, thus leading to a great decline in the economy of the country. The diagram below is a clear indication of how the federal government’s agencies are taking advantage of the situation and increasing their expenses anyhow.
I contend that the Education Department should be abolished without much ado. This is in reference to the effect we have found it having on the country. This department has in one way or another contributed to the decline in the students’ performance. Since this organization came into being, the country has lost a lot of money. This money could have been used to do the other great work that would be profitable to the country other than funding an Education department, which is being the major source of the downfalls the county is finding itself in. Americans have been through a hard time for a long time. The education of our children is not anything to joke about with. I believe that is netter to abolish this organization and return the management to parents and teachers, who will be in a better position to reason out in a better way and offer quality resolutions to the problems facing this sector.
