Slide #1. Design products are aimed to help in overcoming the existing alienation and dissociation of human beings in the process of creating a harmonious environment. Design is a unique phenomenon in nature; it claimed many natural human talents, values, aesthetics, ethics, respect and care for people. Design is the practice of incorporating the new into the existing social system or change of social systems themselves. Slide #3. There are various non-profit and profit organizations that focus on providing design for the needs of society. Profit organizations are mostly based on the grounds of big world-known companies. At the same time, non-profit organizations are functioning all over the globe in order to improve the living conditions. For example, there is such a non-profit organization as Family-to-Family. It is concentrating its main forces on helping families who fall into the difficult living conditions in the United States (“About”, n.d.). The purpose of the organization is to combine a successful family with those who are in a difficult situation, so that they could help each other (“About”, n.d.). They also provide a box of food essentials each month that connects a rich community with some of the poorest areas of the country (“About”, n.d.). Such support can be a wonderful and eye-opening experience (“About”, n.d.).
Slide #4. Pencils of Promise is another non-profit organization, which is aiming to make the world better. Having founded the charitable organization “Pencils of Hope” with a score of $25 in 2008, Adam Brown has built more than 300 schools around the world in the most deprived areas of the country (“About Us,’ n.d.-c). He believes that every child should have an access to quality education (Brown, 2016). The organization exists not only on the donations of people but also has a number of donors who prefer to remain incognito (“About Us,’ n.d.-c). In fact, 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to the Internet to the education of children in Asia, Africa, and Latin America (“About Us,’ n.d.-c).
Slide #5. Waves for Water is a non-profit organization, which cares for water problems and the issue of design for it. A professional surfer, Jon Rose, laid the foundation of the organization after he once experienced the shortage of clean water (“About Us,” n.d.-b). This happened while surfing in Indonesia when he faced an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 points (“About Us,” n.d.-b). He had only ten water filters with him, and thus, he was able to save more than a thousand lives (“About Us,” n.d.-b). Today, Waves for Water provides clean water solutions for communities in need (“About Us,” n.d.-b). This organization and its volunteers are buying water filters and distribute them in communities around the world, thus, ensuring people have an easy access to clean water (“About Us,” n.d.-b).
Slide #6. One of the filters used in the water purification is the Katadyn MyBottle Purifier. Katadyn MyBottle uses a combination of filtration systems in several stages – the carbon filter, the filter of the bacteria and then antiviral one (“The Katadyn MyBottle Turns Swamps Into Springs,” 2010). The system uses a filter with iodine (“The Katadyn MyBottle Turns Swamps Into Springs,” 2010). Slide #7. The prestigious World Design Impact Prize was awarded in 2016 by the Italian architect for the design of the project, collecting water from the atmosphere (“Design,” n.d.). It is called the Warka Water tower. The projects to collect the drinking water existed before. Nevertheless, the Italian architects of the Bureau Architecture and Vision have set themselves the task of creating the maximum available prototype that would work in the poorest areas of Africa (“Design,” n.d.). Warka Water is based on local materials, and the total cost of construction of $1,000 per day is able to collect up to 100 liters of drinking water (“Design,” n.d.). The Warka Water system uses only gravity, evaporation, as well as condensation and does not require electricity (“Design,” n.d.). The design consists of the braided bamboo sticks into the tower, inside which stretched permeable mesh (“Design,” n.d.). It deposited a drop of water from the dew and mist, which, together with the rain water through the connected manifold flowing into a tank (“Design,” n.d.).
Slide #8. Architects have developed a system that was free to the residents erected villages without the use of special devices and instruments. In addition, in the latest versions around the structure and canopy, they added a radius of 10 meters, which makes the utilitarian tower in the social center of the settlement (“Design,” n.d.). In total, various architects have tested 12 prototypes (“Design,” n.d.). The most successful design has dimensions of 9.5 m in height and 3.7 m in diameter and is being built in one day with the help of ten people (“Design,” n.d.). The implementation of the project and the mass installation of towers on the continent are scheduled for 2019 (“Design,” n.d.). Until then, the Italian architects will continue to test a series of designs for the selection of optimal solutions, the most effective and water collection, and the cost of production (“Design,” n.d.).

More recently, it became known that Apple’s CEO is also seriously puzzled about the mentioned worldwide problem and has made a personal financial contribution to the development of the Nebia shower, which is the prototype of economic house shower (Smith, 2016). In the same way, other well-known investors as well as thousands of people donated funds on Kickstarter site (Smith, 2016). As a result, the startup has received more than $2 million (Smith, 2016). However, it took only 100 thousand (Smith, 2016). In contrast to the usual shower, Nebia shower sprays millions of tiny droplets using 70% less water (Smith, 2016). Moreover, the area of the substrate is increased by ten times (Smith, 2016). Thus, it becomes possible to store a lot more natural resources in all fields. This is especially important in the development of tourism, and in the regions which have lack of the natural resources, such as Africa.
Slide #10. The Ecological Urinal was created in places like the capital of Uganda, Kampala (Loomans, 2015). This is the area, where an average of 1,000 people has to share one toilet (Loomans, 2015). This urinal is an adaptable funnel, which is connected to the canister (Loomans, 2015). The urine tank collects and stores urine in a sanitary manner that makes it possible to use urine as a fertilizer of high performance. It should cost just $3, which is acceptable for the region (Loomans, 2015). This project was chosen as a finalist for the award in the 2013 Index, led by its designer Sarah Kelly (Loomans, 2015).
Slide #11. All over the world, there is a large number of toilets that come in all shapes and colors. Most traditional models have one thing in common: human feces are washed with water and then sent to a treatment plant, river, sea or stream. Industrial designer Virginia Gardiner deems it as unnecessary pollution and waste, because excrement its weight in gold (Loomans, 2015). She developed an eco-toilet called Loowatt, which operates without chemicals or water and also produces methane (Loomans, 2015). Bowel movements, with a lever with a mix of the strong suction neutralizing the smell of biomaterials, take a compact form and packaged in the special plastic film (Loomans, 2015). The biogas plant turns excrement into fertilizer and methane (Loomans, 2015).
Slide #12. Without proper storage, grain is very quickly exposed to infestation by insects or fungi. To avoid this, the storage system was developed. That was a significant idea to create a powerful lamp with LED, which is charged with energy during the day by the sun, and in the evening and at bright night lights, illuminating the house (“Our Impact,” n.d.). Called Nokero N100 is a device, which is used to create products for the poor areas of India, Africa and other countries of the “third world”, whose residents cannot afford to use bright light (“Our Impact,” n.d.). This light is on for four hours, which could be provided by a fully charged battery (“Our Impact,” n.d.). The design of the lamps has solar panels, five LEDs, replaceable NiMH-batteries (“Our Impact,” n.d.). So far, the cost per unit is $15 (“Our Impact,” n.d.). Of course, few people in poor regions cannot afford anything similar, but bulbs are distributed free to the neediest (“Our Impact,” n.d.).
Slide #14. In some arid regions of the world, there is no possibility to install electric pumps for water. Therefore, the student from the UK has figured out how to solve this problem. He created a system of bicycle and an electric water pump. A cyclist produces energy that goes to the pump needs. As a result, in one minute it can raise up to 40 liters of water. Slide #15. This device is called XSTAT 30, and it was a startup of the company RevMedX (“XSTAT,” n.d.). It is filled with tiny biocompatible sponges, which can be administered in a deep wound to stop the blood (“XSTAT,” n.d.). As a result, the wound is sealed in less than one minute (“XSTAT,” n.d.). More recently, a device has been approved for civilian use (“XSTAT,” n.d.). According to the developers, the principle of operation of this device is quite simple: all there is needed to be done is to enter into the wound a small amount of the rapidly expanding sponge, using a small applicator (“XSTAT,” n.d.). This device could save many lives, especially in the regions, which are situated far away from the hospitals.
Slide #16. It is known that most of the proposals for the prosthesis do not allow people to restore the sense of touch (Storrs, 2015). However, in the latest version of DARPA’s prosthetic involved Neuro technological development, which can restore the lost human feelings (Storrs, 2015). The creators claim that such a spectacular effect is achieved by acting directly on the brain, in particular, its sensory and motor cortex (Storrs, 2015). This prosthesis is a product of the company’s Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University (Storrs, 2015). This innovative prosthesis would help the patients to feel the world the way healthy people do, which is the major aim of the current technological development (Storrs, 2015).
Slide #17. Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX Musk companies, has created a global project RER Hyperloop (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). For the first time, the concept of a revolutionary project for the transport industry entrepreneur was introduced in 2013 (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). As planned by the mask, a high-speed pipeline system on which trains will run the vacuum, linking Los Angeles and San Francisco, London and Paris (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). The businessman promised that the new vehicle will be two times faster than aircraft and three-four times faster than a high-speed train, travel time from Los Angeles to San Francisco (561 km distance in a straight line) will only take 30 minutes (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). For the realization of the idea, it was decided to create a company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Inc. (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). Business model of the company is not quite common: it brings together volunteers who work for free, counting on success at a fraction of possible revenues from the project (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). On the project, there were gathered 200 volunteers from Cisco Systems, Boeing, Harvard University and the School of Architecture and Design at the University of California Los Angeles (“Transportation at Rocket Speed,” n.d.). Slide #18. The project called “One Laptop per Child” aims to provide children from poor countries with laptops (“OLPC’s Mission,” n.d.). A small device with built-in wireless communication module and a bright display presents such laptops, which are models XO-1 and XO-3 (“OLPC’s Mission,” n.d.). This laptop should be energy-efficient, reliable, and, of course, cheap. Interestingly, the project is already in progress, laptops are ready, and the first batch is already widespread in Afghanistan and East Africa (“OLPC’s Mission,” n.d.). Therefore, to ensure a high level of literacy, Room to Read started its activities in developing countries (“About Us,” n.d.-a). This non-profit organization aims to increase literacy levels, improve the ability to read, and to ensure gender equality in education. Room to Read installed more than 1,800 schools and 16,000 libraries, distributed 13 million books and enrolled more than 25,000 girls in their long-term program of education for girls (“About Us,” n.d.-a). The community strongly supports the project, helping agents with donations, or physically (“About Us,” n.d.-a). This project is significant for the regions, and it provides the sufficient support for children in the world.
Slide #20. Realizing the pairing ideology, a social designer should initially not stand on the side of the current project or project idea, but only on the side of the social object. In this defense of the interests of safety and sustainability of social integrity is the essence of the ecological approach to social engineering. Appeal to the design methods, if necessary, setting integrity is not accidental, because beauty seen by many modern philosophers is one of a few reliable and standing on the threshold of the common objective and subjective criteria of completeness.
