Post colonialism involves the processes of trying to be independent as well as fighting the problems brought across by the colonizing powers.  After gaining independence, India needed to establish its own self governing bodies and form new ways of governing its citizens. The Indian citizens hoped that their community would be free from oppression once their colonial masters had left but the impact caused by their activities is still recognizable up to date. Their culture has been deterred . Hindus are known to be people who uphold human dignity and respect their bodies very much but if one compares the cultural aspect with what is currently taking place in certain areas like the street of cages , then one will be able to assert that the culture of the Indians have changed (Srivastava, 1998). The parents are exchanging their children with money without even caring what awaits this child in the world you are freely giving her/ him into. Children and mostly the girl child with great dreams and hopes about their future have remained hopeless since they are not able to go to school to create a strong foundation for their children. This is one of the greatest gift that a parent gives to their children but what do we see in India , parents giving their children a go ahead to prostitution.

Social inequalities

Colonization also brought across an aspect of social inequalities. The Indians citizens are now divided into social classes, the rich , the middle class and the poor. The life of the rich people and that of the middle class is better off. Good schools , they are able to easily access good and developed health care services, their lifestyles are also very much ok. In comparison to these kind of live we look at the poor people’s lifestyles, No doctors in hospitals, these are the people who are also affected by the corruption and evil deeds of the leaders and the rich people as well, the children to the poor families lack a chance to visit qualified schools; they visit schools whereby the teachers are less than the number of the students, the equipments are also not enough for all students as well as the classrooms size. The classrooms are smaller and cannot accommodate all the students thus some have to learn from the outside. The poverty levels of these people have also led them to doing crazy things like offering their children for sex in exchange of money.

Features of colonial societies

The colonial societies were undemocratic and tyrannical. They did not offer any right to the citizens. No one could say anything against the government and go scoots free. He would either be assassinated or be deprived ones social privileges and be forced to leave his wealth for the colonial power or become a slave. The Domestic governmental systems were controlled from abroad or by a select group which in one way or another become privileged over the other communities.  In most times the privileged groups were those that collaborated with the colonial power. Even after the colonial states gained independence, they have remained under their repressive regimes. This is due to the fact that most communities lacked a strong internal ruling policy and body to take over after the colonial powers took off.

The Partition  or the “Great Divide” of India led and an ethnic conflict across the Indian-Pakistani border and the   formation of movements. The great divide was characterized by expelling the Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan while Muslims migrated to and from India to Pakistan. The migration created tension in the region and finally resulted into war in the  Kashmir region. The congress party ruled the democratic country for quite a long time with its own constitution leaving out the constitution that was respected and agreed upon by the citizens in the democratic country, India. This brought about great opposition and the rise of opposition movements. In 1977, the opposition gained victory with the majority of votes over the congress party. The opposition and competition for victory between the two parties continued and this time with intense power and results. In 1984, the congress party gained victory and won the election with the majority number of votes. Due to its uncouth governance characteristics of not giving the citizens a say in the country’s governance, it was involved in a hot debate with the cultural minority of the Sikhs leading to the assassination of the Indian minister, Indira Ghandi who was trying to fight for the rights of the people.

Colonialism brought across various problems that up to date are still felt in India. These problems include: poverty. The colonial powers were out to benefit their states at the expense of the countries they colonized. They went to the extent of taking away land from the people so that they would grow cash crops which they would later send to their country for production and later bring the product and sell it to the Indian people at high costs yet it was originally their produce (Schwarz, 1997).

My visiting India

The migration to and from India led to an increase in the population of people in general thus causing the state to be overpopulated thus result to shortage and overcrowding at the basic social facilities. In my last visit in India I realized that some local schools were really having a great time ensuring that each and every child who turned up to get education from the schools get a chance to be in class and participate on equal grounds with the rest students. The classrooms were smaller compared to the number of students thus some of them had to learn from outside. This made it very hard for the teacher to have an encounter with every child thus leading to some pulling out from school while others lacked like the slow learners lacked the attention they needed from the teacher.

The treatmant

The case was the same in hospitals and mostly in a location known as Bihar. There were really long lines of patients at the local dispensaries. Most patients went home untreated since the doctors were less than the number of patients while others were treated but lacked the prescribed medications thus their case remained the same as to that of those who were not treated since they could not afford to buy the medications due to their financial status.  The other problems that could be associated with colonialism are environmental pollution and ethnic and religious conflicts like those encountered in 1950.The only major developed that could be associated with colonialism is the economic progress that India is making in the recent days ( Raju, 2006).

The slavery

There is also an aspect of slavery that was created by colonialism in India. For example in the book, The Blue Notebook by James A. Levine, the author explains about sexual slavery for children. Child abuse found it was in India and is deeply rooted in the state. Batuk, a 15 year old girl was sold off by her father at the age of nine to the street of cages owners where she now serves as a sex object. Despite the critical condition that this girl is in she is still strong and optimistic about tomorrow (Roy, 1999). From her story we can affirm that colonialism brought about a change in the culture of the Indian people. Parents have become desperate in life due to the high cost of living and since they are not in a position to cater for the needs of their children, some of them are sold off so that they can actually manage to buy food for the rest of the family members.  The poverty levels in the country have gone to this extent of selling children as sex objects so as to avoid responsibility.

‘The White Tiger’

In the book The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, the author clearly explains how the poor people are treated in India. Despite the fact that he himself is from a middle class family, he still cares and is out to let the dirty truth about the matter at hand known to everyone so as to help the less unfortunate. Adiga has clearly presented the mistreatment that the middle class people and the rich ensure that the poor people who come to their homes to work undergo. The workers are forced to work hard under low wages; they would be killed in case they did something that was unpleasant to their masters.  The author of the book The Blue Notebook by James A. Levine clearly represents the gender inequalities that were introduced in the Indian community. Women or rather the females in India are facing a great challenge whereby the men are taking advantage of them and using them as trade items. Girls are being sold out by their fathers to become sex objects in return of money. Batuk is one of the girls who were taken in the cages at the age of nine years she has stayed in there since she has nowhere to run for rescue.

This has made her to feel desperate and lose her direction in life. The girl seems to be very hardworking a determined lady but her father deemed her life. She has tried to live a positive life by always trying to put down records of her daily life experiences , the lady is lucky enough to have met with James A. Levine who has helped her dream come true by eventually using her story to enhance his book outline. Today the post colonial governments have taken up unjust policies which they believe will help them to retain their political powers and status. The traditional, resources and cultural  rights have been denied to many populations. The groups that were marginalized during the colonial rule have remained in this condition even under the post colonial period. Mass murder which is one aspect of human rights violation has also remained an indigenous practices in some parts of India (Mills, 2004.)

Conclusion

In conclusion , I can contend that colonialism has caused a lot of problems to the lives of the poor Indian citizens. Social classes are as a result of the western way of life gaining entry into India. The rich take advantage of the poor people forcing them to work under harsh conditions yet get a low wage. The cooks and maidens are forced to always wake up early cook food and wash for their masters yet they are not allowed to eat the same food as their masters. At times they would be forced to et the remain of their masters food or cook a low quality food compared to that which their masters are eating . some were even very ruthless that they could ensure that the workers wen for a few days without food . The workers would sleep very late at the night and wake up early the next morning. In case these workers did something against the will of their masters , they would face a thorough beating or at sometimes even be subjected to death.

The lives of the people in the village have become very hard due to the high poverty levels in their locations. The colonial powers ensured that they stole or rather took land and other expensive investments from the people of India thus making displacing them into reservoirs where life was very hard for them. Those who went into the reservoirs were forced to seek for job opportunities from the farms and industries of their masters. In these industries they did quite a lot of work under a low wages , many others lost their lives in the reservoirs due to poor living conditions where some acquired tuberculosis but due to the lack of qualified health services they lacked to receive the necessary treatment resulting to death.

The aspects of post colonialism are still very visible in the current living conditions. The colonialists introduced slavery into India. They would visit a village and capture a good number of people and take them to their industry to work there under low wages. The slaves had no say they would live and do what their masters commanded of them. This aspects has still remained relevant in the most of the villages in India . A good example of such a village is the street of cages where children are sold off as sex slaves. The poverty levels of this people have made them to try all they can so as to ensure that they manage to avoid their basic needs.
